A 77-year-old man has received an immediate custodial sentence of six years at the High Court in Edinburgh after being convicted of a series of non-recent sexual and violent offences committed against children over a 29-year period.
Archibald Thorburn appeared in the dock for sentence on Friday 6 November 2026, having previously been found guilty of multiple charges following proceedings before the High Court of Justiciary.
The prosecution outlined that the offences took place between 1963 and 1992, predominantly within the Portobello district of Edinburgh. Over nearly three decades, Thorburn cruelly subjected young victims to sustained physical assaults and sexual abuse.
Specialist officers from Police Scotland carried out a detailed historical inquiry after survivors brought the non-recent crimes to the attention of law enforcement.
Detective Inspector Stephanie Garnett, of Police Scotland, commended the survivors following the sentencing:
“This was a harrowing investigation, and our thoughts are with the victims. The abuse they suffered as children is unimaginable and I hope this sentence helps bring them some closure. Thorburn’s crimes were truly shocking; he cruelly subjected them to physical and sexual abuse over a number of years. We remain committed to supporting victims of sexual crime and protecting children from harm and abuse. We will use all available resources to find and arrest the abusers. I would urge anyone who is a victim of abuse to speak to police in the knowledge you will be listened to, taken seriously and fully supported.”
Under statutory Scottish legal protections and UK reporting guidelines, all victims in this case are protected by mandatory, lifelong anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of material capable of leading to their identification is strictly prohibited under law.
Sentencing Thorburn at the High Court in Edinburgh, the judge highlighted the gravity of the prolonged abuse inflicted upon vulnerable children and ordered him to serve an immediate prison term of six years.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Thorburn was made subject to statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
