An Isle of Wight man who admitted a comprehensive catalogue of 25 child sexual offences spanning more than a decade has received a custodial sentence of nearly 17 years at the Isle of Wight Crown Court.

Gareth Wheeler, residing at Blackthorn Close in Ryde, appeared in the dock for sentence on Friday 6 November 2026 after entering guilty pleas across a 25-count indictment detailing prolonged sexual abuse against children.

The court heard that Wheeler’s offending took place over a 12-year timeframe between 2011 and 2023. Prosecuting barrister Nick Tucker outlined that Wheeler’s predatory actions inflicted profound and lasting psychological trauma upon his victims.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary launched an investigation and arrested Wheeler on 4 November 2023. Detectives executed a search of his Ryde property, seizing computer hard drives and digital media devices for examination. Forensic analysis conducted by specialist digital examiners recovered 33 indecent images of children alongside an illicit image depicting bestiality.

In a poignant victim impact statement read before the court, one of the survivors recounted the horrific reality of the abuse, describing it as feeling like “a bad dream” and stating that she “just wanted it all to go away.” She explained that Wheeler had hurt her so severely that it made her cry, leaving her helpless and not knowing how to make the pain stop.

Confronted with the evidence assembled by law enforcement, Wheeler admitted his guilt to 25 separate sexual offences.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and survivors in this case are protected by mandatory, lifelong statutory anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of information capable of leading to their identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Sentencing Wheeler, the presiding Crown Court judge condemned the devastating impact of his long-term offending on young lives, handing down an immediate custodial sentence of 16 years and eight months.

In addition to the lengthy prison term, Wheeler was ordered to comply with statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life and made subject to stringent post-conviction protective orders, including a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
