In 2026, Merseyside Police released closed-circuit television (CCTV) images and launched an appeal for public assistance following a fatal dog attack on a domestic pet cat in Prescot.
The incident took place during the afternoon of Wednesday 12 August 2026 at approximately 3:40 PM along Speakman Way. According to investigating officers, two men, suspected sex offenders, were walking a large dog on a lead through the residential street. As they passed a nearby bush where a domestic pet cat was sheltering, one of the men detached the dog’s lead. The unleashed animal attacked the cat, inflicting catastrophic physical injuries.
The severely injured cat was rushed to veterinary care but had to be euthanised due to the untreatable severity of the trauma sustained during the attack.
Officers reviewed area CCTV footage and gathered witness accounts, subsequently publishing surveillance stills depicting two men and the large dog involved in the incident.
Constable Jess Burrows of Merseyside Police stated:
“We will not tolerate such irresponsible dog ownership on our streets. These types of attacks on pets can have a devastating impact on owners and their animals and we take these incidents seriously. If you witnessed this attack or recognise the dog and the two men pictured please contact us. Similarly, if you live in the area and have any further information, please get in touch Any information you hold could be vital to our enquiries.”
Police are urging residents in the Speakman Way area, motorists with dashcam recordings from that afternoon, or anyone who can identify the handlers or the dog to contact the force.
