Mark South, then aged 38, a Jamaican national residing in Ashford, Kent, has entered guilty pleas to 49 child sexual offences at Winchester Crown Court following an extensive nationwide inquiry.

South appeared in court on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, where a trial had been scheduled to begin. Instead, South formally admitted to all 49 charges on the indictment.

The investigation began in May 2023 after a safeguarding officer at a local school in Swindon alerted Wiltshire Police to concerns regarding child exploitation.

Detectives from Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, working alongside the Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, uncovered widespread offending spanning multiple counties from Essex to Cornwall.

The court heard South utilised an elaborate setup involving burner phones, prepaid numbers, and numerous social media aliases to groom, manipulate, and blackmail vulnerable young girls.

South coerced victims into sexual encounters in exchange for cash, clothing, trainers, and vapes.

South pleaded guilty to:

  • Engaging in sexual activity with a child
  • Taking and distributing indecent images of children
  • Blackmail
  • Engaging in sexual communication with a child
  • Inciting a child into sexual exploitation
  • Causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity

Detective Constable Geoff Newnham stated that South crossed county borders to commit severe offences under the false belief that the internet provided anonymity, adding that his eleventh-hour guilty pleas spared the victims from having to endure giving evidence at trial.

The presiding judge remanded South in custody to be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court during a two-day hearing listed for 14 and 15 December 2026.
