James Edwards, aged 26, of Horndean, Hampshire, was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to two counts of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour against his former partner, 23-year-old Skye Nicholls, who took her own life.
Skye Nicholls was found dead at her home address in Lindford, East Hampshire, on 9 June 2023. While conducting inquiries into her death, police established that Edwards, whom she had started dating in December 2022, had subjected her to persistent domestic abuse.
The court heard that Edwards subjected Skye to repeated verbal abuse, threatened her with physical violence, and told her on multiple occasions to take her own life.
Hampshire Constabulary investigated the domestic abuse, leading to formal charges:
- Two counts of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour
Edwards pleaded guilty to both counts on 1 September 2025.
On 7 November 2025, Edwards was sentenced to two years and three months’ imprisonment. Following an appeal lodged by Edwards, his sentence was reduced on 27 February 2026 to 21 months’ imprisonment.
