Abdalraham Katende, aged 30, of Ferme Park Road, Haringey, London, was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, after being convicted of child rape, sexual offences, and failing to comply with a court order to provide access to his mobile phone.
The court heard that Katende was employed as a support worker at a children’s residential care home, placing him in a direct position of trust over vulnerable young people. In October 2023, Katende approached a 15-year-old female resident while she was preparing food in the care home kitchen before sexually assaulting and raping her. The victim screamed and managed to break away from him.
During the same month, Katende also subjected a 14-year-old resident to abuse by showing her an explicit video on his mobile phone depicting him having sex with a woman.
Following disclosures by both victims, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation. Detectives seized Katende’s mobile phone, but he refused to voluntarily disclose the PIN. Officers applied for and secured a formal notice under Section 49 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA), authorised by a Crown Court judge. Katende continued to withhold his PIN, leading to a separate criminal charge for failing to comply with the notice.
Appearing before Snaresbrook Crown Court on 11 May 2026, Katende was convicted of:
- One count of rape of a child
- One count of sexual activity with a child
- One count of causing a child to watch a sexual act
- One count of failing to provide access to devices contrary to Section 49 of RIPA
On 8 July 2026, the presiding judge handed Katende a total custodial sentence of 11 years’ imprisonment.
