Former English sprint coach and 2010 Commonwealth Games 200m champion Leon Baptiste, aged 41, is serving a custodial sentence in Marrakech, Morocco, following a conviction for sexually assaulting a child.
Baptiste, who worked as a consultant sprinting coach for UK Athletics, preparing British athletes for international championships, has been out of contact for more than three months. His sudden absence left multiple sprinters without coaching support during preparations for the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.
Sources at the Moroccan Justice Ministry confirmed that Baptiste was arrested by authorities in Marrakech in May 2026 following allegations of sexual assault against a child.

The court initially sentenced Baptiste to 10 months’ imprisonment. Following an appeal, the custodial term was reduced to eight months. Judicial sources confirmed that Baptiste remains detained at a local prison in Marrakech to serve the remainder of his sentence.
