Ian Moffat, aged 63, of York, North Yorkshire, was sentenced to 22 years and eight months’ imprisonment at York Crown Court on Thursday, 20 August 2026, after being convicted of child rape, sexual assault, and possessing indecent images of children.

The court heard that Moffat subjected a girl to systematic sexual abuse and rape over the course of the past decade. The offences were formally disclosed to North Yorkshire Police in December 2023, initiating an immediate criminal investigation.

Following his arrest, detectives seized Moffat’s digital devices. An examination carried out by the Digital Forensics Unit revealed that his desktop computer contained 149 indecent images of children.

Moffat entered guilty pleas on 1 September 2025 to:

  • Making 21 Category A indecent photographs of children
  • Making 18 Category B indecent photographs of children
  • Making 110 Category C indecent photographs of children
  • He denied the contact offences, but on 9 July 2026, a jury at York Crown Court found him guilty of:
  • Six counts of rape of a girl
  • Two counts of sexually assaulting a girl

Appearing for sentence on 20 August 2026, the judge handed Moffat a total custodial term of 22 years and eight months. Moffat was placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, issued with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), and the court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of his computer tower.
