Martin Connelly, aged 45, of Unity Street, Bristol, Somerset, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, after being found guilty of the non-recent sexual assault of a child.

The court heard that the charge related to an incident in which Connelly committed a physical sexual assault against the young female victim under her clothing. Connelly continually refused to accept responsibility or demonstrate remorse for the abuse, maintaining denials throughout the investigative process and subsequent trial.

Avon and Somerset Police’s specialist child protection team initiated a comprehensive investigation after the victim disclosed the non-recent offending. Detective Constable Kimberley O’Leary commended the complainant’s resilience and bravery in supporting law enforcement, noting that her evidence was pivotal in bringing Connelly before the courts and preventing potential future harm.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim delivered a impact statement in court, detailing how Connelly’s actions had caused long-term trauma while affirming her determination to stand up to her abuser.

Following a trial at Bristol Crown Court in June 2026, a jury found Connelly guilty of assault by touching.

On 5 August 2026, the presiding judge sentenced Connelly to a total custodial term of three years and four months’ imprisonment. The court also ordered that Connelly remain subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for the duration of his life.
