Reece Mason, then aged 29, of Marine Parade, Lowestoft, Suffolk, was sentenced to three years in prison with a four-year extended licence at Ipswich Crown Court in October 2022 after pleading guilty to a sexual assault against a teenage girl.

The court heard that Mason targeted a lone teenage girl in Kirkley Fen Park, Lowestoft. Mason initially approached the child under the guise of chatting, obtaining her phone number in the process. He subsequently made telephone calls and transmitted electronic messages to her. Mason then approached the victim a second time in the park and sexually touched her inappropriately over her clothing, an assault that left the victim severely traumatised.

Suffolk Police initiated a comprehensive investigation following the victim’s report to law enforcement. Detectives from Lowestoft CID executed enquiries that identified Mason as the perpetrator, resulting in his arrest and subsequent charges for two counts of sexual touching and one count of meeting a child following grooming.

During proceedings at Ipswich Crown Court, Mason entered a guilty plea to one count of sexual touching. The remaining counts of sexual touching and meeting a child following grooming were ordered to lie on file by the court.

Detective Inspector Matt Adams from Lowestoft CID commended the victim’s bravery in coming forward to report the attack and noted that police investigations into sexual offences aim to ensure perpetrators are held fully accountable before the courts.

Presiding over the case, the judge sentenced Mason to a custodial term of three years in prison alongside an extended licence period of four years upon release.
