In 2021, Rhys Long, then 19 years old, of Cynghordy, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after pleading guilty to making and distributing indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography.
The court heard details regarding a digital forensic investigation into Long’s online activities. Investigators uncovered almost 200 indecent images and videos stored on his electronic devices. Forensic analysis confirmed that 40 of these files were classified as Category A—the most extreme category of child sexual abuse material—showing the graphic rape or torture of young children. Officers also seized 25 extreme pornographic images depicting bestiality.
Prosecution evidence presented at Swansea Crown Court established that Long was actively involved in distributing these Category A child rape images and extreme pornographic files to other like-minded individuals online. Although several young victims made additional allegations of child grooming against Long during the investigation, prosecutors confirmed that no formal charges were brought in relation to those specific claims.
At Swansea Crown Court, the presiding judge opted not to impose an immediate custodial sentence, instead handing Rhys Long from Llandovery a suspended prison sentence. The court imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) restricting his online activities and device usage, and ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register immediately.
