In 2021, Stephen Henry Walker, then 68 years old, formerly of Chipstead Lane, Lower Kingswood, Tadworth, Surrey, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to 29 years in prison after being found guilty of 40 charges of sexual abuse relating to 15 children.
The court heard details regarding a four-decade campaign of severe abuse carried out by Walker between 1966 and 2007. Walker, who worked as a salesman and served briefly as a Metropolitan Police officer, exploited his position as a children’s football coach to gain access to young boys and girls. The prosecution outlined how Walker targeted vulnerable children through sports teams and family connections, carrying out sexual assaults, gross indecency, inciting gross indecency, attempted buggery, and buggery against his young victims across Surrey, as well as locations in France and Malta.
Surrey Police launched a complex investigation in March 2018 after an initial victim came forward. As more survivors were located, the full extent of Walker’s crimes emerged. To evade justice, Walker fled to Malta and lived under an assumed name until October 2019, when he returned to the UK and was arrested by law enforcement. While held on remand, additional charges were brought as more victims contacted the Surrey Police complex abuse team.
During emotional proceedings at Croydon Crown Court, multiple victims detailed the lifelong trauma inflicted by Walker, including severe psychiatric difficulties, addiction, and ruined family relationships. Walker refused to leave his cell to face his victims or listen to the victim impact statements. Presiding Judge Elizabeth Smaller described Walker as a serial child sexual abuser who deliberately selected vulnerable victims he believed would not be credited. Judge Smaller sentenced Stephen Walker from Tadworth to 28 years in prison with an extended one-year licence, ordering that he serve a minimum of 14 years before becoming eligible for parole.
