In 2021, Michael Cuthill, THEN a 59-year-old man from Woodside, admitted targeting what he believed was a 13-year-old girl online after being exposed by child protection groups.
Michael Cuthill, of Fullerton Court, Woodside, pleaded guilty at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to attempting to cause a child under 16 to view a sexual image and attempting to communicate indecently with a child. The court heard that Cuthill contacted a profile on the dating app Badoo between 7 February and 23 February 2020, believing he was speaking to a 13-year-old girl. The account was operated by the group Forbidden Scotland. Despite being repeatedly reminded of her age, Cuthill moved the chat to WhatsApp, sent an image of his genitals, discussed having sex and children together, and arranged to travel to Stirling to meet before backing out. Groups including Keeping Kids Safe and HOPE confronted Cuthill at his home and notified Police Scotland.
Sheriff Margaret Hodge deferred sentence for reports and made Cuthill subject to notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
Following his convictions for child sexual offences, Cuthill was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
He also remains subject to statutory public protection notification requirements, risk assessments, and monitoring by law enforcement.
