In 2026, Gerard Mark Clarke, a then-30-year-old man with 73 previous convictions, was granted bail at Belfast Crown Court after entering guilty pleas to domestic abuse offences following 13 months spent in custody.
Gerard Mark Clarke, of no fixed abode, appeared at Belfast Crown Court via video link from HMP Maghaberry on Friday, 31 July 2026. Clarke was re-arraigned and pleaded guilty to common assault and breaching a restraining order against one woman—both offences aggravated by domestic abuse—as well as common assault and criminal damage against a second woman, in relation to incidents on 10 January 2025. Charges of non-fatal strangulation and threats to kill were left on the books. The court heard that Clarke has 73 previous convictions, including prior domestic violence offences and a history of absconding while on bail.
Judge Patrick Lynch KC granted bail, given the time already served in custody, subject to strict conditions, including residing at an address in north Belfast, reporting to the police three times a week, and having no contact with the victims.
Clarke is scheduled to return to Belfast Crown Court for sentencing on 2 September 2026.
Following his guilty pleas to domestic abuse offences, Clarke remains subject to ongoing judicial oversight, bail conditions, and future statutory supervision upon sentencing.
