In 2021, Martin Cambridge, a then-43-year-old man from Caerphilly, was jailed for eight months after pleading guilty to making indecent images of children and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Martin Cambridge, of Heol y Dreflan, Caerphilly, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court, where he admitted making six Category A, four Category B, and two Category C indecent images of children, as well as breaching his SHPO. The court heard that Cambridge had previously been convicted in 2017 for possessing child abuse material and was made subject to online restrictions. However, on 8 June 2020, Gwent Police raided his home address while he was under supervision and discovered further child abuse films and pictures downloaded from the internet. When asked by officers why he downloaded the material, Cambridge claimed he was drawn to it out of “self-destructiveness”.
Judge Michael Fitton QC rejected Cambridge’s claims of “morbid curiosity,” stating he had a “dreadful urge” to view such material, and sentenced him to eight months in prison. The judge also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of his electronic devices.
Following his convictions for child sexual abuse material and order breaches, Cambridge was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made subject to a new SHPO running until 2031.
He also remains subject to statutory public protection notification requirements and long-term risk management by law enforcement upon any eventual release from prison.
