In 2021, Alexander Murphy, a 49-year-old former police officer from Paisley, was placed on the Sex Offenders Register after admitting to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl and supplying alcohol to underage girls at a party.
Alexander Murphy, of Paisley, Renfrewshire, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to sexual assault and committing a breach of the peace. The court heard that the offences took place in March 2019 at a property in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, while Murphy was a serving police officer based in Livingston. Prosecutors detailed how Murphy purchased alcohol for a group of underage girls, sold spirits to attendees, and made a series of inappropriate and predatory remarks while heavily intoxicated.
During the gathering, Murphy touched a 15-year-old girl inappropriately on her knee and hips, made suggestive comments, and engaged in erratic behaviour that alarmed the young attendees. Following a police investigation, Murphy resigned from the force in disgrace and admitted his actions during formal interviews. Sheriff Mungo Bovey QC placed Murphy on the Sex Offenders Register and deferred final sentencing pending the preparation of background reports.
In addition to facing sentencing for his offences, Murphy was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
