Michael Chand, the North London rapist who was arrested 24 hours after the crime, was found guilty of rape and assault against a woman he had recently met. He was given a life term in jail in May 2024.
Less than a week before, Michael Chand, 46, had become friends with his victim. He got in touch with the victim and told her to come to his house on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, in Acacia Gardens, N22.
At his home, the woman was asked if she thought he was attractive. When she did not provide the necessary answer, he became angry and verbally abusive, claiming that she was not allowed to leave the house.
After that, he started hitting her and threatening to harm not only her but also other people she knew. Despite her repeated refusals to have sex, Michael Chand continued to abuse her physically and raped her three times.
Two days later, on Friday, August 18, 2023, the woman reported the rape to the police. Detectives then quickly searched for Michael Chand, who had left London. Later that day, Michael Chand returned, was caught, and taken into custody before being charged.
Michael Chand is a sexual predator who inflicted appalling sexual and physical abuse upon the victim in this case,” said Detective Constable Cameron Crighton, who led the investigation.
By approaching the police, providing a thorough account of what happened, and then testifying in court, the victim displayed incredible bravery. She is essential to this belief, and we shouldn’t undervalue the perseverance it has taken for her to succeed.
We take all reports of sexual assault very seriously, and we encourage anyone who has been the victim of such crimes to come forward and contact us.
Michael Chand was found guilty of three charges of rape and one act of assault at a trial at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, February 16. He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum period of ten years on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
