In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Darren Tripconey, then 46, of Green Parc Road, Hayle, Cornwall, was sentenced for possessing a collection of child abuse material described as “the most appalling.” On Thursday, 23 May 2019, Tripconey appeared at Truro Crown Court, where he admitted to possessing Category A, B, and C indecent images and breaching a Sexual Offending Prevention Order (SOPO).
The investigation established that Tripconey, a two-time convicted paedophile, had used a neighbour’s Wi-Fi connection in an attempt to bypass court orders. When police raided his home in November 2017, Tripconey reportedly told officers, “It’s me, I’ve lapsed again.” Forensic analysis reported that his collection included “vicious” videos of children as young as six being subjected to anal and oral rape. The court heard that in one “vile” clip, a child was seen vomiting during the ordeal, while another depicted an eight-year-old being raped while wearing a mask.
Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail
Judge Robert Linford emphasised that Tripconey was an “ingrained pervert” with an “appalling record” for accessing and distributing such material. The court reported that Tripconey had been using an Xbox games console to access the internet since 2010, which was a direct breach of an SOPO imposed in 2009. The prosecution emphasised that despite claiming he “just wants to be normal,” Tripconey had engaged in online chats with other offenders and had distributed a number of photographs.
The judge emphasised that Tripconey had set about breaking his court order almost immediately after it was issued. The investigation reported that even after his initial devices were seized, officers returned in April 2019 to find a USB stick containing further illicit material plugged into his television. For his crimes in Cornwall, the court determined that the defendant’s persistent “vile” behaviour and his “despicable” choice to use a neighbour’s internet connection to hide his activities required a substantial custodial sentence.
Sentence and Statutory Requirements
For his crimes in England, Darren Tripconey was handed:
- Custodial Sentence: Sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
- Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements are in effect for life.
- Convictions: Admitted possessing Category A, B, and C indecent images and breaching a Sexual Offending Prevention Order.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Tripconey is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Devon & Cornwall Police. Due to his status as a repeat offender who has “viciously” targeted the most extreme categories of child abuse material, his management remains under the highest level of scrutiny.
As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Tripconey must comply with mandatory notification requirements regarding his residence in Hayle. Authorities state that his history of using gaming consoles and neighbours’ Wi-Fi to facilitate “vile” conduct necessitates strict digital monitoring by the Public Protection Unit. Any breach of his registration conditions or his future licence terms will result in his immediate arrest and return to Truro Crown Court.
