In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Joseph Wilson, then 41, of Stonegate House, Stone Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. On Wednesday, 22 May 2019, Wilson, a former accountant and teacher, now living in Harrogate and going by the name of Matt Wilson, appeared at Bradford Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to possessing a “vile” collection of over 150,000 indecent images of children.

The investigation established that Wilson’s offending came to light in May 2018, following a search warrant executed at his flat. Despite being released under investigation, Wilson was re-arrested in February 2019 after further forensic analysis reported that he had continued to download “vicious” images even after his initial arrest. The prosecution reported that his collection included Category A images depicting the rape and torture of children, as well as 72 extreme pornographic images involving bestiality and 26 prohibited images of a child.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

Judge Jonathan Rose emphasised that Wilson was a “paedophile” who had “facilitated the further distribution” of thousands of images through the use of file-sharing torrent software. The court reported that Wilson had systematically used the search term “Lolita” to curate his collection. The judge emphasised that hardships in one’s personal life do not “explain, justify or mitigate” such significant offending.

The prosecution emphasised that Wilson was already a registered sex offender who had previously served a prison sentence for similar “despicable” crimes in 2009. The judge emphasised that by using torrent software, Wilson had actively participated in a network that ensures children “somewhere in the world” continue to be sexually abused. For his crimes in Bradford, the court determined that his repeat offending and the file-sharing element were major aggravating factors that necessitated immediate incarceration.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in England, Joseph Wilson was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Three years in immediate custody.
  • SHPO: A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed to restrict his future internet and device usage.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were activated for a period determined by his sentence.
  • Convictions: Pled guilty to possessing Category A, B, and C indecent images, prohibited images of a child, and extreme pornographic images.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Wilson is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by West Yorkshire Police and the prison estate. Due to his history as a repeat offender and his “vile” professional background as a teacher and accountant, his status is under the highest level of scrutiny by the Public Protection Unit.

As a member of the Sex Offenders Register, Wilson must comply with mandatory notification requirements regarding his residence in Stone Street, Bradford. Authorities state that his previous disregard for the law—continuing to download “vicious” material while under investigation—necessitates intensive digital monitoring. Any breach of his registration conditions, his SHPO, or his licence terms upon release will result in his immediate arrest and return to Bradford Crown Court.
