In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Claudiu Ivascu, then 23, and Nicolae Mihai, then 22, were incarcerated for the predatory rape of a woman in her own home. On 10 October 2018, both men appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court, where they were sentenced for the brutal attack that took place in Colchester, Essex, the previous year.

The investigation established that on 14 April 2017, the victims were at the woman’s home in Colchester when the two men, who had been drinking heavily, turned violent. The prosecution reported that Ivascu, of Sycamore Road, claimed it was his birthday and used this as a justification to make sexual demands. When the victim refused, Ivascu raped her while Mihai, of Albert Street, assisted by holding her down so he could also carry out a sexual assault. Essex Police arrested both men later that same day following the report of the attack.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

Detective Constable Liv Howells emphasised that the victim was “attacked in a place she considered safe by a person she knew and his friend.” The court reported that while the men were intoxicated, the victim had remained sober throughout the evening. The jury found Ivascu guilty of two counts of rape and Mihai guilty of one count. However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on an additional charge of assault by penetration against Mihai.

The judge emphasised that both defendants acted as “sexual predators” who showed a total disregard for the victim’s autonomy. The prosecution emphasised that the joint nature of the attack—where one defendant restrained the victim to facilitate the other—was a particularly harrowing aspect of the case. For their crimes in Colchester, the court determined that significant custodial sentences were necessary to reflect the gravity of the offences and to ensure the community’s safety.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For their crimes in Essex, the defendants were handed:

  • Claudiu Ivascu: 12 years in immediate custody for two counts of rape.
  • Nicolae Mihai: 8 years in immediate custody for one count of rape.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Both men were placed under lifetime notification requirements.
  • Convictions: Found guilty of rape following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Ivascu and Mihai are managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Essex Police and the prison estate. Their status as “sexual predators” who coordinated a violent attack in a private residence means they are subject to the highest level of oversight.

As lifetime members of the Sex Offenders Register, both men must comply with strict notification requirements regarding their residence and any future travel. Authorities state that their removal from the streets of Colchester has made the community safer. Any breach of their registration conditions or their licence terms upon their eventual release from prison will result in their immediate arrest and return to Chelmsford Crown Court.
