In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Daniel Stokes, then 31, of Alice Walk, Bilston, Wolverhampton, was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment. On Tuesday, 2 April 2019, Stokes was jailed at Wolverhampton Crown Court after being caught distributing “vile” indecent images of babies and young children to other paedophiles online.

The investigation established that Stokes used an internet chatroom to exchange illegal material with at least five other “like-minded” individuals. When West Midlands Police raided his home in October 2017, they seized two laptops and a mobile phone. Analysis of these devices uncovered 90 indecent images, 36 of which were in the “worse” category (Category A), depicting the rape and torture of children.

Distribution and Judicial Findings

The court reported that Stokes had not only possessed but actively distributed these images, including one “abhorrent” picture of a baby being sexually abused. Although no money was exchanged, the “persistent” swapping of material with others served to perpetuate the “reprehensible” market for child abuse imagery. Judge Nawas emphasised the “sinister” nature of the crimes, stating: “What sort of pleasure anyone could derive from seeing young children suffering is beyond me.”

The prosecution emphasised that Stokes’ involvement in a digital network of paedophiles made his offending particularly “serious.” By distributing the images, he was directly contributing to the ongoing violation of the children depicted. Stokes admitted to six charges in total: three of making (downloading) indecent images and three of distributing them.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in Bilston, Wolverhampton, Daniel Stokes was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 20 months in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed for 10 years.
  • SHPO: A 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order was issued to strictly monitor his internet access and digital conduct.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Stokes is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by West Midlands Police. His history of “systematic” digital distribution and interest in the most severe categories of child abuse imagery means his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a registered sex offenderStokes must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address at 1 Alice Walk, Bilston. Authorities state that the 10-year SHPO is a “critical” tool to prevent him from re-entering the digital chatrooms he used to facilitate his “reprehensible” hobby. Any breach of his registration conditions or his digital monitoring terms following his release will result in his immediate return to Wolverhampton Crown Court.
