In December 2025, the Offender Database reported that John Monteith, 58, was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for a decades-long campaign of domestic and sexual abuse. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Inverness following his conviction at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court in November 2025.

The court heard that Monteith’s predatory and violent behaviour targeted a single female victim over 35 years. The offences occurred in the Sanquhar area of Dumfries and Galloway between 1986 and 2021. The prosecution detailed a sustained pattern of abuse that transitioned from domestic violence to serious sexual offences, highlighting the long-term trauma inflicted upon the survivor.

Detective Inspector James McLuckie of Police Scotland’s Domestic Abuse Task Force praised the victim’s bravery, noting that the length of the sentence reflects the severity of Monteith’s crimes. During the trial, evidence established that Monteith had used his position of control to isolate and abuse the victim for over three decades before she felt able to come forward to the authorities.

On Wednesday, 17 December 2025, Monteith was handed a custodial sentence of nine years and six months. In addition to the prison term, the judge imposed a lifelong non-harassment order, strictly prohibiting Monteith from ever contacting or approaching his victim again. This measure is intended to provide the survivor with permanent legal protection upon his eventual release.

As a result of his convictions for sexual offences, John Monteith has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He will be managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in Scotland, ensuring that Police Scotland and the Scottish Prison Service closely monitor his risk level and behaviour to safeguard the public.
