Imran Uddin, then aged 35, of Richmond Road, Hockley, Birmingham, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of murdering his 24-year-old partner, Ismail Younis.
The conviction follows a comprehensive investigation conducted by the West Midlands Police Homicide Unit into the killing, which took place on 17 August last year.
The court heard that the murder was the culmination of a two-year campaign of domestic abuse, coercive control, and manipulation inflicted by Uddin.
Matters escalated after Ismail discovered evidence of Uddin’s infidelity and declared his intention to permanently end the relationship.
In response, Uddin stalked Ismail into Birmingham city centre, repeatedly visiting the victim’s place of employment throughout the day.
CCTV footage captured Ismail subsequently riding as a passenger on Uddin’s motor scooter en route to the defendant’s residential property on Richmond Road.
Once inside the premises, Uddin attacked Ismail, initially using manual strangulation before inflicting multiple stab wounds with a kitchen knife.
Pathological evidence presented to the jury established that Uddin continued to deliver stab wounds after Ismail had already died from his injuries.
Following the attack, Uddin washed the knife, placed it back into a kitchen storage drawer, and fled the West Midlands via a train departing Birmingham New Street for Milton Keynes.
CCTV and witness evidence confirmed that on the day following the murder, Uddin displayed complete indifference to his actions, attending a local salon where he received a haircut and had his eyebrows threaded before stopping at a restaurant to eat.
Ismail’s body was not discovered until three days later on 20 August, prompting detectives to launch an urgent nationwide manhunt.
Uddin was tracked down and arrested by police officers in the Aylesbury area the following day.
Body-worn video footage documented Uddin feigning shock and confusion when informed he was under arrest for murder.
Subsequent digital and forensic analysis revealed traces of Ismail’s blood on Uddin’s mobile phone.
Uddin contested the charges, but following deliberations, the jury rejected his claims and returned a unanimous verdict of murder.
Detective Sergeant Jeanette Roberts commended the witnesses who provided crucial evidence detailing Uddin’s controlling background, noting that he had admitted during trial testimony to being a toxic narcissist who acted out of rage when Ismail attempted to reclaim his independence.
Ismail’s family released a moving tribute expressing their ongoing grief, stating that while their lives would never be the same without him, his memory and love would remain with them forever.
The presiding judge sentenced Uddin to mandatory life imprisonment, setting a minimum custodial tariff of 21 years.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing mandatory life sentences for murder, Uddin is required to serve the entirety of the 21-year minimum term in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply to the Parole Board. He will only be considered for release on licence if the Parole Board determines he no longer poses a danger to the public. If released, Uddin will remain subject to life licence conditions and immediate recall to prison for the rest of his life.
