In 2022, Carlos Nunes Alves, the Jersey paedophile, 60, was sentenced to two years in prison for non-consensually touching a teenager.

Carlos Nunes Alves was characterised as being ‘sufficiently aged to be [the victim’s] grandfather’ during his sentencing in the Royal Court yesterday.

In addition to incarceration, Alves was registered as a sex offender and recommended for deportation.

The state police commended the ‘courage and bravery’ exhibited by the victim, who was under 16 at the time of the assault, and emphasised that support services were accessible.

After Carlos Nunes Alves’ sentencing, investigating officer Constable Claudia Mendez stated: ‘This must have been a harrowing experience for the victim, who has demonstrated considerable strength and fortitude throughout the entire process.’

We will thoroughly examine all alleged sexual offences and will prosecute perpetrators in court. We assure victims that numerous services are available to provide help and guidance throughout all stages of the criminal justice process.

The State police stated that Jersey’s 2018 Sexual Offences Law enhanced victim protection and elucidated the legal framework regarding consent.

At yesterday’s sentencing, Crown Advocate Sam Brown informed the court that Carlos Nunes Alves had developed an interest in the youngster in the months preceding the charges and had previously kissed her on the neck.

Advocate Brown stated that on 25 August, Carlos Nunes Alves seized the child from behind and inappropriately touched her while grinding against her. The girl nudged Carlos Nunes Alves with her elbow, prompting him to release his grip, and she exited the room.

Approximately 20 minutes later, she re-entered the room, and Carlos Nunes Alves swiftly approached her, touching her again in the same manner while asking her to his bedroom.

Two days post-assault, Carlos Nunes Alves confronted the girl, expressing remorse and characterising the incident as a ‘mistake,’ while imploring her not to report it to the authorities. By that point, the episodes had already been documented.

During the police interrogation, Carlos Nunes Alves disclaimed knowledge of the girl’s age but acknowledged the charges.

In advocating for a two-year jail sentence, Advocate Brown characterised Carlos Nunes Alves as having a ‘history of sexual misbehaviour,’ during which the defendant ‘particularly targeted the victim in solitary situations.’

Defending Advocate Sarah Dale characterised the assaults as ‘opportunistic offences’ and contended that Carlos Nunes Alves merits consideration for his prompt guilty pleas, absence of prior convictions, and authentic remorse. Advocate Dale stated that Carlos Nunes Alves cannot justify his acts and expressed that he is profoundly remorseful and regretful over the emotional impact on his victim.’

She did not oppose Carlos Nunes Alves’ deportation, stating that her client anticipated that his removal would offer a ‘little solace’ to his victim, alleviating her concerns about encountering him.

In a victim impact statement presented in court, the girl expressed that she no longer felt like her former self, experienced difficulties with sleep, was anxious around men, and had a restricted social life due to her fear of leaving the house.

In delivering the court’s punishment, Lieutenant-Bailiff Anthony Olsen, presiding, remarked that the teenager’s statements were ‘difficult to read’ and expressed the court’s hope that Carlos Nunes Alves was ‘really experiencing remorse’ for his acts.

Jurors Robert Christensen and Elizabeth Dulake were seated.
