In October 2026, Philippine law enforcement authorities initiated an active forensic investigation into Thomas Markle Sr following the reported recovery of child sexual abuse material from his former property in Cebu.

The inquiry was made public after Philippine interior minister Jonvic Remulla confirmed that the Philippine National Police (PNP) searched Markle Sr’s former home in Cebu, seizing a laptop computer and associated digital storage devices.

Minister Remulla confirmed that the Philippine National Police will coordinate with international partner agencies to determine legal proceedings if the evidence confirms criminal liability. Speaking on the ongoing inquiry, Remulla indicated that digital forensics specialists are conducting complete examinations of the recovered hardware, with definitive findings expected within a week.

The allegations were brought to authorities by Thomas Markle Jr, who stated he uncovered the material at the Cebu property before lodging reports with Philippine police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Markle Sr, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at a nursing facility in Florida following medical procedures, denied possessing illegal imagery. While admitting he had previously travelled to the Philippines and paid adult women for sexual services, Markle Sr stated he had never engaged in sexual conduct with anyone under the age of 18, asserting that any illicit content present on the computer must have been installed by a third party.

The development has also led to scrutiny regarding historical handling by UK authorities. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that in 2019, detectives received correspondence detailing allegations regarding alleged offending overseas. While officers showed the letter to the Duchess and Duke of Sussex, the information was not disseminated to external statutory bodies or international police forces.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it is conducting an internal review into the handling of the 2019 correspondence to assess whether the matter warrants formal self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
