Amal Bose, then aged 55, of Main Road, Thurnham, Lancaster, has been erased from the medical register after being convicted of sexually assaulting five junior female members of staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Bose, a former consultant and head of the cardiovascular department, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment (72 months) in September 2025 after a jury convicted him of 12 counts of sexual assault spanning between 2017 and 2022.
The prosecution detailed an established pattern of predatory conduct in which Bose targeted junior female colleagues working in less senior roles.
The court heard that Bose groped a colleague while scrubbing up prior to an operation, purposefully grabbed another victim’s breast in an operating theatre after putting on surgical gloves, pulled down a staff member’s top to expose her chest, and referred to a junior colleague as “fresh meat” while groping her breast under the guise of reaching for a pen.
Victims described an unchallenged toxic environment within the department where new staff were routinely warned about his behaviour, with one survivor reporting that she was touched inappropriately whenever she encountered him, causing significant mental distress and leading her to alter her work schedule.
Following a Medical Practitioners Tribunal hearing on 31 July 2026 chaired by Melissa Coutino, the regulatory panel found that Bose had not completed any structured treatment programme directed at his behaviour and that his insight remained incomplete.
The Tribunal determined that Bose posed a significant ongoing risk to public protection and that public confidence in the medical profession would be undermined without the ultimate sanction.
The panel ordered the immediate erasure of Bose’s name from the medical register alongside an immediate order of suspension.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Bose is required to serve two-thirds (48 months / 4 years) of his 72-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date falls in September 2029, whereupon he will remain subject to licence conditions and supervision in the community until the expiration of the full term in September 2031.
