Steven Evans, then aged 33, of Alton Square, Openshaw, Greater Manchester, was sentenced to a 24-year custodial sentence with an extended eight-year licence period in November 2023 after being convicted of 37 offences, including rape, sexual assault, and administering a noxious substance.
The court heard that Greater Manchester Police’s North Manchester CID initiated a full investigation in December 2022 after a female victim contacted law enforcement. The victim had located an old mobile telephone belonging to Evans which contained numerous explicit images and video recordings depicting Evans sexually assaulting her while she was asleep or unconscious. The victim disclosed that she had previously experienced unexplained physical pain, but Evans had discouraged her from seeking hospital treatment and dismissed her concerns.
Subsequent investigative enquiries led officers to identify a second female victim who reported a similar pattern of abuse. She detailed being subjected to rape, coercive control, emotional manipulation, and spiking by Evans, subsequently discovering explicit photographs taken without her knowledge or consent. Further police enquiries identified two additional female victims who had been spiked by Evans during a house party.
Following Evans’ arrest on 8 March 2023, digital forensic examiners conducted a thorough review of his seized electronic devices. Investigators recovered 61 photographs and 35 videos detailing over 25 separate non-consensual sexual encounters. Furthermore, analysts uncovered specific internet search queries on Evans’ devices, including terms such as “define sexomnia,” “what conditions make you sleep,” and “what diseases make you sleep.”
Despite Evans denying all allegations throughout police interviews, detectives compiled a comprehensive evidence bundle that led to formal charges and his subsequent conviction at court.
On Thursday, 30 November 2023, the presiding judge sentenced Evans to 24 years in prison alongside an extended eight-year licence period upon release. The court also granted an indefinite restraining order protecting all four victims and ordered Evans’ lifetime placement on the sex offenders register.
