In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Salam Karis, 35, had finally been brought to justice after fleeing the country to avoid prosecution for “vile” and “vicious” crimes committed over a decade ago. Following a trial at Oxford Crown Court, a jury found Karis guilty of three counts of rape.

The “serious” offences took place in Oxford city centre, Oxfordshire, in 2014. The victim, a young woman who was visiting friends for a night out, was targeted by Karis in a “predatory” manner. Although Thames Valley Police identified and arrested Karis on the same day as the attack, he “dishonestly” fled the country after being released on court bail, attempting to escape the consequences of his “vile” behaviour.

The Pursuit of Justice
For over ten years, Thames Valley Police ensured that his “Fail to Appear” warrant remained active. This persistence paid off when Karis attempted to re-enter the UK through Kent, where he was immediately arrested by border authorities and returned to Oxfordshire to face trial.

The prosecution emphasised the “tremendous courage” of the survivor, who, despite the long passage of time, remained committed to the investigation. Her resilience in giving evidence in court was instrumental in securing the “serious” guilty verdicts.

Sentence and Monitoring
This time, instead of releasing him to fly home, Salam Karis has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on 11 March 2026. As a result of his conviction for rape, he will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Upon his eventual release, he will be managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Thames Valley Police.

Due to his previous history of fleeing the jurisdiction, his post-release licensing conditions are expected to be “serious,” likely including strict residency requirements and travel restrictions to prevent any further attempts to evade justice.
