A Metropolitan police officer, Rupert Edwards, has been sentenced for rape after being convicted. The prosecution utilised evidence from a previous trial to demonstrate the officer’s repeated predatory behaviour.
Following a trial on May 22, 2026, Rupert Edwards, 33, was convicted and sentenced to seven years of imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court.
After attending a New Year’s Eve celebration, Edwards sexually assaulted the victim on January 1, 2018. In October 2023, she reported the offence to the police after discovering that two additional women had made allegations of rape against Edwards.
In 2022, Edwards was previously charged with these allegations and went to trial; however, he was not found guilty.
Prosecutors successfully petitioned the court to use the same evidence as poor character evidence in this trial, even though he had not been convicted in the previous trial.
Prosecutors presented cross-examination evidence and recorded interviews from the previous proceedings, which revealed similarities in Edwards’ behaviour across both cases.
The court concurred that the evidence was pertinent and consistent with the defendant’s right to a fair trial.
