In 2021, Robert Evan Mason, an 80-year-old man from Topcliffe, was jailed after being convicted of historical child abuse offences against two young girls.
Robert Evan Mason, of Swale View, Topcliffe, was sentenced at York Crown Court on Tuesday, 8 June 2021, after being found guilty by a jury of six counts of indecent assault on children and one count of committing an act of gross indecency with a child. The court heard that Mason subjected two young girls to years of sexual abuse, which began when one of the victims was just six years old. Mason was acquitted of 10 other charges of sexual assault.
The victims reported the historic abuse to North Yorkshire Police in January 2020, leading to a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution. Following the jury’s guilty verdicts, the judge sentenced Mason immediately in court, ensuring he was taken into custody to serve a prison term for his crimes against the two victims.
Following his convictions for sexual offences against children, Mason was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
He also remains subject to statutory public protection notification requirements and monitoring to manage ongoing risks to the public in the event of any eventual release.
