In 2026, a 58-year-old man from Worcestershire was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment at Worcester Crown Court after abandoning his defence mid-trial and admitting multiple child sexual offences.
Nicholas Richards, of Ford House Road, Bromsgrove, appeared before the court to stand trial on an indictment comprising four offences relating to child sexual exploitation.
The prosecution outlined charges involving the illicit procurement of child abuse material alongside predatory online contact. The indictment specifically detailed:
Three counts of making indecent photographs of a child
One count of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child
Richards had entered not guilty pleas during preliminary hearings, requiring the Crown Prosecution Service to present the case before a Crown Court jury. However, as proceedings got underway, Richards altered his position and formally entered guilty pleas to all four counts on the indictment.
Following his mid-trial conviction in March 2026, the court remanded Richards on conditional bail and ordered him to commence compliance with the Sex Offenders Register immediately.
Richards returned to Worcester Crown Court on Monday 20 April 2026 for sentence. Passing judgment, the Crown Court judge addressed the gravity of producing indecent images of children and seeking illicit sexual communications, sentencing Richards to an immediate custodial term of three years’ imprisonment.
In addition to the prison term, the court reaffirmed statutory notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register alongside judicial protective orders.
