In 2026, the Offender Register reported that a government minister had stated that the victims of one of the most horrific and shocking child custody scandals in the UK were collectively ignored for decades due to their status as working-class lads from the north of England.
Jake Richards, the minister of sentencing and youth justice, has declared that he is enacting several recommendations to prevent the recurrence of abuse at Medomsley detention centre in County Durham, which occurred between 1961 and 1987.
For three decades, the paedophile Neville Husband, who is considered one of Britain’s most notorious paedophile sex offenders, subjected boys to torture and abuse at Medomsley.
Eric Allison, the late prisons correspondent, and Simon Hattenstone, the feature writer, disclosed his reign of terror in numerous Guardian reports from 2011.
Durham Constabulary conducted a six-year investigation into the revelations, during which it identified over 2,000 victims. Adrian Usher, the prisons and probation ombudsman, published the bleak findings of an inquiry in November of the previous year.
This resulted in a government apology to victims and the establishment of a review of safeguarding arrangements throughout the juvenile custody estate in England and Wales.
