Mohangopi Tadiboyina, then aged 30, of Brynmill, Swansea, has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment at Swansea Crown Court on Friday, 4 September, after being convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault following a street ambush on a lone woman.
The sentencing concludes a criminal investigation conducted by South Wales Police into an incident that occurred on Kings Road, Swansea, in October 2024.
The court was told that Tadiboyina deliberately targeted the female victim as she was walking along the street alone at night.
Tadiboyina confronted the woman and initiated a violent attack, sexually assaulting her before attempting to carry out a full rape.
The victim fought back during the assault, successfully broke free from Tadiboyina’s grasp, and ran from the scene.
She encountered a passer-by nearby, who intervened to support her and assisted in reporting the incident directly to police.
Detectives initiated immediate inquiries led by PC Bendrey, identifying and arresting Tadiboyina.
Tadiboyina maintained his innocence, forcing the case to a contested trial in July.
Following three days of evidence, the jury rejected his claims, returning guilty verdicts on:
- One count of attempted rape
- One count of sexual assault
Detective Sergeant Samuel Lewis commended the diligence of the investigating officers and the fortitude of the victim, stating that the conviction secured justice, removed a dangerous predator from public streets, and provided reassurance to the local community.
On Friday, 4 September, the presiding judge handed Tadiboyina an immediate custodial sentence of eight years (96 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing determinate custodial sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, Tadiboyina is not entitled to automatic early release at the standard halfway mark. He is required to serve a minimum of two-thirds (64 months / five years and four months) of his 96-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply to the Parole Board for release on licence. If approved for release, Tadiboyina will serve the remaining balance of the eight-year sentence under strict probation supervision in the community.
