In 2026, the Offender Register reported that Michael Thompson, 56, was convicted of the rape and murder of Kimberley Thompson, 43, following a six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.
In the course of the trial, the jury was informed that Thompson had subjected Kim to years of domestic abuse, which included physical violence, coercion, and control. However, Kim had made preparations to move on without him as their divorce was nearing completion.
Thompson and Kim, who had been married for 19 years, had been separated for two years. Despite this, they continued to reside in the same house on Pinewood Road in Northampton, albeit with separate lodgings.
Thompson entered Kim’s bedroom on Saturday, August 9, 2017, between midnight and 3:30 a.m. and sexually assaulted and strangled her.
Then, he spent time staging her bedroom to create the illusion that Kim had committed suicide. He also posted messages on her social media accounts before contacting the East Midlands Ambulance Service for assistance at 5:30 a.m.
Kim’s suicide was promptly reported to paramedics and police officers by Thompson.
Nevertheless, in the wake of her death, Kim’s family and friends expressed their scepticism regarding her suicide, claiming that she had been formulating plans and disclosing her history of domestic violence to law enforcement.
On August 12, a formal murder investigation was initiated, and Thompson was apprehended on suspicion of Kim’s death.
Thompson was found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice, one for covering up the rape and the other for covering up her murder, in addition to being found guilty of the rape and murder of Kim.
