Adam Batley, aged 30, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, after being found guilty of rape of a child under the age of 13.
The court heard that the investigation was initiated after a 12-year-old girl went missing from home and was located in the company of Batley, who was 28 at the time. The victim subsequently disclosed to social workers that Batley had subjected her to sexual abuse.
The disclosures were referred to the dedicated BSAFE child sexual exploitation team in Barnsley. In detailed accounts provided to officers, the girl disclosed that Batley had plied her with drugs and alcohol, rendering her semi-conscious before raping her.
Police rearrested Batley, who refused to answer questions during his formal interviews, answering “no comment” throughout. He subsequently pleaded not guilty in court, forcing the child to give evidence during a seven-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
On 31 July 2026, the jury returned a unanimous verdict, finding Batley guilty of:

Appearing for sentence on 19 August 2026, the presiding judge handed Batley a nine-year custodial term and imposed an indefinite restraining order preventing any contact with the victim.
