In July 2026, Police Scotland launched a murder investigation following the discovery of the bodies of Stacy Mair and her husband Jim Mair at a property in Houston, Renfrewshire.
Officers responded to a report of concern for a person at a cottage on Corsliehill Road in Houston on Monday, 27 July 2026, where they discovered the bodies of 35-year-old Stacy Mair and 43-year-old Jim Mair. Police Scotland confirmed that Mrs Mair’s death is being treated as murder, while Mr Mair’s death is being treated as unexplained pending post-mortem results. Detectives from the Major Investigation Team confirmed there is no indication of third-party involvement or a wider risk to the public.
It was subsequently confirmed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) that Jim Mair had been arrested and appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on 6 July 2026, charged with assaulting Stacy Mair. He had been released on bail pending further examination. Following the deaths, COPFS confirmed that all criminal proceedings against Jim Mair have concluded. Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young and Chief Inspector Iain Farmer stated that specialist officers are providing ongoing support to the victims’ families as local enquiries continue.
Due to the death of the suspect, criminal court proceedings against Jim Mair have ceased.
Police Scotland and the Crown Office continue to complete formal investigations and fatal incident reviews to provide definitive answers to the family and local community.
