In September 2018, the Offender Database reported that Jeffrey Kirby, then 61, of Elland, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Bradford Crown Court. Kirby, a former hospital radio volunteer, was convicted of a decade-long campaign of sexual abuse against four young girls.

The court heard that Kirby’s offending occurred between 1997 and 2007. The paedophile subjected his victims to repeated sexual touching both over and under their clothing. While Kirby was well-known in the community for his volunteer work at a local hospital radio station, Judge Colin Burn described him as a “two-sided character” whose charitable public persona masked a predatory private life. The investigation, led by the Calderdale District Safeguarding Unit, revealed that the victims had “suffered in silence” for years before finding the courage to come forward.

During the trial, Kirby denied 13 historical allegations, but the jury found him guilty of 10 counts. The prosecution detailed the devastating long-term impact on the survivors, who had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), severe anxiety, and depression. One victim testified to having nightmares almost every night, while another described living with constant, intrusive flashbacks. Detective Sergeant John Moore of West Yorkshire Police praised the bravery of the victims, noting that their testimony was instrumental in securing the conviction.

Jeffrey Kirby was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Judge Burn emphasised that the psychological damage inflicted on the girls was so profound that they might never fully recover from his actions. In addition to his custodial sentence, Kirby was made subject to a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which restricts his contact with children and monitors his activities upon release.

As a result of his convictions for multiple serious sexual offences against children, Kirby has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under the highest level of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in West Yorkshire. This ensures that West Yorkshire Police and the National Probation Service maintain permanent and intensive monitoring of his residency and behaviour to mitigate the risk he poses to the community.

UPDATE

Jeffrey Kirby is now living in Rippendale, Halifax and is on Facebook looking for new victims.
