A 32-year-old convicted sex offender who repeatedly breached a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to access extreme child abuse material has been sentenced to 16 months at Bournemouth Crown Court.

Jason Powell appeared for sentence on 15 September 2026 following an investigation by Dorset Police into multiple violations of preventative court restrictions.

The court was told that Powell was previously placed under the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to mitigate the risk of further sexual harm. However, on 16 May 2024, Powell used the messaging application Kik from his mother’s home to transmit and upload indecent images of children.

On 9 July 2024, law enforcement officers executed an arrest and confiscated two mobile handsets and several SD cards. Digital forensic specialists examined the devices, recovering 105 Category A images and videos—the most extreme tier of child sexual abuse material under UK law. In total, the recovered files comprised approximately three and a half hours of explicit footage, including recordings showing the violent rape of a four-year-old girl.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, any child depicted in abuse material is granted automatic, lifelong anonymity. It is an offence to publish or disseminate any information that could lead to the identification of the victims across any media format.

Prosecutor Ben Thompson outlined that Powell’s conduct represented a flagrant disregard for judicial boundaries designed to safeguard children from exploitation.

The presiding judge sentenced Powell to a 16-month term, comprised of 10 months’ imprisonment followed by six months of post-release supervision. Under standard UK determinate sentencing frameworks, offenders serve half of the custodial period before release on licence. Factoring in the statutory credit applied for time served on remand prior to sentencing, Powell is scheduled for release in December 2026.

Upon release, Powell remains bound by:

  • Continued notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
  • Enforceable terms under his Sexual Harm Prevention Order
