In 2026, the Offender Register reported that Huw Edwards, the disgraced paedophile newsreader, had been instructed to repay his £200,000 BBC salary if he possessed any degree of “moral rectitude.”
The 64-year-old former BBC news presenter was the subject of a grooming scandal in 2023 and subsequently entered a plea of guilty to the creation of indecent images of children a year later.
Dr Samir Shah, the chair of the BBC, informed MPs that the organisation has not “renounced hope” of reclaiming the £200,000, asserting that it is the property of license fee filers.
“I have previously expressed my belief that Huw Edwards should return the money; however, he has not done so,” he informed the Culture Committee. I discovered that he is seeking some form of redemption.
“I believe it would be a commendable initiative for him to return the money, provided that he possesses any integrity.” I believe he should have done so; however, he has not yet.
Dr Shah stated that the money “belongs to the licence payer” and that “it does not belong to Huw Edwards.”
The BBC encouraged Edwards to refund the £200,000 it paid him between his arrest in November 2023 and his resignation six months later.
He has since declined to return a portion of his salary.
In 2024, Edwards was sentenced to a six-month prison term, suspended for two years.
It was discovered that he had been sending thousands of pounds to a teenager in exchange for sexual images.
He alleges that Edwards’ grooming victim was 17 years old when he was purportedly coerced into sending him explicit content, which he claims resulted in the development of a drug addiction.
The veteran broadcaster had also secretly received indecent images and videos of children from a convicted paedophile, with some of the victims being as young as seven to nine years old.
The Westminster magistrates’ court heard that Edwards responded with “any more” when he was sent some of the most severe abuse images. “Go on,” he replied when it was suggested that he could receive “naughty” recordings from the same source.
In 2020 and 2021, Edwards paid up to £1,500 to university student Alex Williams, who had sourced images from the Dark Web and was sending legal pornographic images of young men and illegal images and videos of children being sexually abused to him over WhatsApp.
