In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Hugh Heron, then 55, of Knightswood, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Heron was jailed for the historic sexual abuse of two schoolgirls, with the court hearing that he targeted the victims at night while they were in bed and under his care.

The court heard that Heron’s first victim was subjected to a series of sexual attacks over six years between 1993 and 1999, beginning when she was 12 years old. Heron targeted the second victim on a single occasion at a property in Maryhill between January 1993 and June 1995, when she was 14. Both victims, now in their late 30s, provided harrowing testimony; the younger victim recalled being too terrified to report the abuse at the time it was occurring.

Following a trial, Hugh Heron was convicted of four charges: one count of indecent assault and three counts of using lewd, vulgar, and libidinous practices—a specific legal term used in Scots Law for certain sexual offences against children. The prosecution detailed how Heron exploited his position of trust to carry out the attacks, specifically targeting the girls in the vulnerability of their own beds.

During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Norman Ritchie QC addressed Heron’s “breach of care,” stating that a custodial sentence was unavoidable given the nature of the offences. As the sentence was delivered, members of the public gallery reportedly reacted with relief. The judge noted that the courage of the two women in coming forward decades later was instrumental in bringing Heron to justice.

In 2019, Hugh Heron was sentenced to 15 months in prison. In addition to his custodial term, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of 10 years. He remains subject to strict notification requirements and is monitored under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in Scotland to ensure he poses no further risk to the public.
