Gavin Bennett, then aged 45, of Porthcawl, Bridgend, was sentenced to three years and eight months’ imprisonment (44 months) at Cardiff Crown Court on 1 September 2026 after attempting to flee into the sea to evade arrest for sexual offences.
The incident occurred on the evening of 22 October 2025 at around 9.45pm, when South Wales Police officers responded to reports that a man had been transmitting sexually inappropriate messages to a girl he believed was under the age of 16.
Upon encountering officers on Porthcawl seafront, Bennett ran directly into the sea in an effort to avoid detention.
Response officers entered the water despite dangerous coastal currents and low visibility to detain Bennett, bringing him safely back to shore before he was transported to hospital and subsequently booked into custody.
Bennett entered guilty pleas within three days of the seafront arrest.
The court heard Bennett was also sentenced for a separate investigation initiated in August 2023, following disclosures from an adult female victim that Bennett had subjected her to numerous sexual assaults over a two-year period.
Appearing before Cardiff Crown Court, Bennett was sentenced for:
- Two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child
- Two counts of sexual assault on a female
Detective Constable Owain Hembury stated that Bennett had willingly sought to manipulate someone he believed to be a child under 16 for his own sexual gratification, commending the bravery of the officers and the female survivor who came forward.
The presiding judge sentenced Bennett to a total custodial sentence of three years and eight months’ imprisonment and imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Bennett is required to serve two-thirds (29.3 months / 2 years and 5 months) of his 44-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. His projected release date falls in February 2029, whereupon he will remain subject to licence supervision in the community until the expiration of the full term in May 2030.
