In 2021, Gary Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, THEN a 76-year-old former pop star, was reported to be under consideration for a transfer from HMP The Verne to an open prison.

Paul Gadd, former musician known as Gary Glitter, was jailed in 2015 for 16 years after being convicted at the Old Bailey of attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a child under 13, and four counts of indecent assault relating to three young victims between 1975 and 1980. Gadd’s history of offending includes a 1999 UK conviction for possessing thousands of child abuse images and a 2006 conviction in Vietnam for child sexual abuse. In 2021, reports emerged that prison governors at HMP The Verne on Portland had earmarked Gadd for a potential move to open conditions, raising concerns from victims and members of the public regarding potential day release eligibility and risk to the community.

The court sentenced Gadd to 16 years’ imprisonment in 2015.

Following his convictions, Gadd was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and made subject to strict public protection notification requirements.

He also remains subject to statutory licence conditions, recall provisions, and multi-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA) upon any eventual release.
