Fazli Qadeer, aged 25, of Mayfield Park, Bristol, has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment at Bristol Crown Court after being convicted of sexually assaulting and raping an elderly, bedbound woman while employed as her professional carer.
The court heard that Qadeer, a Pakistani national who arrived in the United Kingdom on an educational student visa, secured employment within the adult care sector in Bristol.
The role placed him in an unsupervised position of significant trust, tasked with providing daily personal care to dependent individuals.
Prosecution barristers revealed that Qadeer planned the attack after discovering that members of the woman’s immediate family would be away from the home.
During a scheduled care visit, Qadeer entered the bedroom of the victim, who was completely bedbound and lacked the physical capacity to resist or seek help.
Qadeer climbed onto the victim’s bed, telling her that he “loved her” and “wanted to marry her”.
He then proceeded to kiss the woman, touch her intimately, and carry out a sustained sexual assault that included oral rape.
Following a police complaint, Avon and Somerset Police arrested Qadeer.
During formal interrogation, Qadeer offered an account in which he claimed that the bedbound, elderly woman had initiated the contact and sexually assaulted him.
The case proceeded to trial at Bristol Crown Court, where a jury unanimously rejected Qadeer’s claims and found him guilty of the charges.
Sentencing Qadeer, the judge condemned the egregious breach of trust against a defenceless victim, imposing an immediate custodial term of 12 years (144 months).
The judge additionally granted a restraining order barring Qadeer from making any contact with the victim.
The court confirmed that his legal entitlement to remain in the United Kingdom under his visa will be formally referred to the Home Office for deportation consideration upon the expiry of his prison term.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing standard determinate sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, statutory early release at the halfway mark does not apply. Qadeer is subject to the mandatory two-thirds custody provision, requiring him to serve a minimum of two-thirds (eight years / 96 months) of his 12-year sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to be considered for statutory release on licence by the Probation Service.
