A 51-year-old man from Horwich has received a 19-year extended sentence at Manchester Crown Court after being convicted of repeatedly raping a girl under the age of 13 and producing hundreds of indecent pseudo-images of children.

Edward Bond, of Highland Road, Horwich, was sentenced after a jury dismissed his denials following a contested Crown Court trial.

The prosecution detailed that the sexual offences took place in Bolton across a timeframe spanning the 2010s up to 2020. Over this period, Bond targeted the victim when she was under 13 years old, subjecting her to multiple rapes and sustained sexual assaults.

During the police inquiry, digital forensics teams conducted extractions of Bond’s hardware, recovering 576 illicit files depicting child sexual abuse. The evidential breakdown recorded:

Seven images in Category A (the most severe statutory grading)

One image in Category B

568 images in Category C, including computer-generated pseudo-images

Bond pleaded not guilty to all charges, requiring the young survivor to see the case through a trial at Liverpool Crown Court. After reviewing the physical, digital, and testimonial evidence, the jury convicted Bond on all nine counts on the indictment:

Three counts of child rape

Three counts of assaulting a girl under 13

Three counts of making indecent pseudo-images of children

The matter was transferred to Manchester Crown Court for sentencing. The presiding judge assessed Bond as a dangerous sexual offender and imposed an extended determinate sentence of 19 years. The terms require Bond to serve an immediate custodial sentence of 18 years before parole eligibility, followed by an extended licence period of one year under strict supervision in the community.

The court further ordered that Bond be subject to indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register and placed on the statutory Barred Lists, permanently preventing him from working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults.

Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and complainants connected to criminal proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Bond stood convicted of:

Three counts of child rape

Three counts of assaulting a girl under 13

Three counts of making indecent pseudo-images of children

Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:

19-year extended determinate sentence (18 years’ custody and one year on extended licence)

Indefinite mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Permanent barring from working with children or vulnerable adults (Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists)

Dangerous offender post-custodial statutory licence supervision conditions enforceable upon release from custody
