Daniel Greaves, aged 35, of Patrington, East Yorkshire, has been handed a suspended prison sentence at Hull Crown Court after amassing a collection of more than 114,000 indecent images and videos of children over a 10-year period.
Greaves pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children spanning between October 2014 and March 2024. The court heard that Humberside Police executed a search warrant at his address and seized a total of 76 digital devices. The aggregate volume of media recovered across all the seized hardware exceeded 22 million images and videos, representing an archive of such immense size that digital forensic analysts were only able to examine seven of the devices.
Across those seven analysed devices alone, investigators identified 114,190 confirmed indecent images and videos. The haul included more than 9,000 images and 862 videos categorized within Category A, the most severe legal classification, depicting children as young as three to five years of age being subjected to rape and sexual torture.
During his subsequent police interview, Greaves acknowledged that he had accessed the dark web. He exercised his right to make no comment when questioned regarding whether he used encrypted networks to source child abuse material, and stated that the illicit content did not particularly arouse him sexually.
At sentencing, the court imposed a two-year custodial term suspended for an operational period of two years. Under the conditions of the suspended sentence order, Greaves was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work within the community and complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days under the supervision of the Probation Service.
The court additionally made Greaves subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting his access to digital devices and the internet, ordered him to register on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of 10 years, and approved a forfeiture order directing the destruction of all 76 seized devices.
