In 2019, Dean Luckhurst, then aged 23, of Ramsgate, Kent, was sentenced to an extended sentence of eight years at Maidstone Crown Court after being convicted of sexual offences against a child.
The conviction followed an investigation by Kent Police into offences committed across Swale and East Kent.
The court heard that in November 2018, Luckhurst initiated contact with a young girl across social media platforms, orchestrating an online dialogue that progressed to sexual messaging.
During these interactions, Luckhurst sent an illicit photograph of himself to the child.
In February 2019, Luckhurst arranged an in-person meeting with the victim at Teynham Railway Station.
He then escorted the child to a secluded wooded area located a short walking distance from the station platform, where he supplied her with cannabis and engaged in sexual intercourse with her.
Luckhurst maintained contact by sending persistent sexual communications to the victim until the offending was reported to Kent Police in March 2019, resulting in his arrest in Ramsgate on 5 April 2019.
Luckhurst pleaded not guilty but was convicted by a jury of:
- Inciting a child to engage in sexual activity
Investigating officer Police Constable Jenny Boyden stated that Luckhurst had manipulated a child to satisfy his sexual desires, commending the survivor for coming forward to provide evidence that ensured his conviction.
On Tuesday, 24 December 2019, the court handed down an extended sentence comprising four years’ imprisonment (48 months) followed by an extended licence period of four years.
The judge also ordered that Luckhurst be subject to the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing extended determinate sentences for sexual offences, Luckhurst was required to serve at least two-thirds (32 months / 2 years and 8 months) of the four-year custodial term in prison custody before becoming eligible for parole consideration and statutory release on licence. Upon release, he remains subject to statutory licence conditions and supervision for the remainder of the custodial term plus the entire four-year extended licence period.
