In 2021, Barry Warner, a then-51-year-old man from Birkdale, was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a child.
Barry Warner, of Bedford Road, Birkdale, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court for sentencing after admitting to engaging in sexual communication with a child. The court heard that Warner, a self-employed heating engineer, targeted a 13-year-old girl online, sending sexually explicit messages and requesting an exchange of photographs despite knowing her age. When the victim reported the communication to her mother, Warner attempted to intimidate the child into deleting the messages, claimed the interaction was a joke, and subsequently lied to Merseyside Police officers, claiming he believed he was speaking to her mother.
Recorder Ian Unsworth QC described Warner’s actions as “pre-planned, predatory sexual behaviour” targeting a vulnerable child and sentenced him to 12 months in prison, ordering that he serve half in custody and the remainder on licence. The judge also imposed a 10-year restraining order.
Following his conviction for child sexual offences, Warner was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
He also remains subject to statutory public protection notification requirements and long-term risk management by law enforcement upon any eventual release from prison.
