After securing a 2-1 win in Atlanta, prominent players including Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso were seen parading a fan-made white banner with the handwritten slogan “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentinian”).
The celebration directly violated FIFA’s strict Stadium Code of Conduct, which explicitly prohibits political gestures and messaging on the pitch.
The incident sparked immediate backlash from the UK Government. Business Secretary Peter Kyle condemned the display as “entirely inappropriate”, emphasising that sports and politics should remain strictly separate.
He called for a thorough FIFA investigation into the matter, a sentiment echoed across Westminster.
Meanwhile, political figures in Buenos Aires stoked the flames, with Vice-President Victoria Villarruel previously labelling the English team as “usurping pirates”.
The geopolitical stunt has reopened old wounds from the 10-week Falklands War in 1982, a conflict that cost over 900 lives.
