In 2025, a 38-year-old man was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment at Ipswich Crown Court after being convicted of raping a woman inside a pub toilet during their first date.

Anwarul Islam, formerly of Springett Avenue, Ringmer, near Lewes, East Sussex, appeared before the court for sentencing having been found guilty by a jury of rape and sexual assault following a contested trial.

The prosecution detailed how Islam connected with the victim, a woman in her 30s, through a mutual friend. After exchanging voice messages, the pair arranged to meet in person the following day at a pub in Elmswell, Suffolk, in March 2022.

Evidence presented to the court revealed that despite having only met the victim that day, Islam had already researched local hotel rooms on his mobile phone and repeatedly suggested that they book one together. Later during the date, Islam pursued the victim into the pub’s toilet facilities and subjected her to a non-consensual sexual assault and rape.

In a victim impact statement read during proceedings, the complainant described the severe psychological trauma caused by the attack, remarking that she had trusted him believing he was a decent person. She stated: “I’ve lost count of the amount of times I have cried since this happened. I have been very sad and I don’t know how to process this trauma.”

Detective Constable Jasmine Mulley of Suffolk Constabulary commended the survivor’s courage, noting that Islam maintained a total refusal to accept responsibility for his conduct, thereby forcing the victim to relive the trauma in the witness box.

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge addressed the predatory violation of following the victim into the conveniences and sentenced Islam to nine years’ imprisonment for rape, alongside a six-year concurrent term for sexual assault.

The court further issued an indefinite restraining order prohibiting Islam from having any contact with the victim and made him subject to statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
