After a trial in August 2025, Alex Owers, a 46-year-old white British man from Queens Road in Hull, was found guilty of two charges of suffocation, two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of intentional strangling.
But he was also found guilty of five charges of rape in a second retrial that took place in April 2026. After appearing at Grimsby Crown Court last week (Thursday, June 18, 2026), he was sentenced to 21 years in prison with an extra six years to be served on an extended licence, given a lifelong restraining order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
On Friday, January 3, 2025, we received third-party information that a woman had been suffocated to the point of unconsciousness while staying at a hotel in Tunisia, which prompted us to begin an investigation into Owers. In an effort to make her death appear unintentional, investigators were told that she was strangled, had a pillow placed over her face, was carried into a room by her hair, struck in the ribs, peed on, and threatened with being thrown from a balcony.
Owers was taken into custody by Essex Police at London Stansted Airport after returning to the United Kingdom.
When the woman was confronted by investigating officers, she revealed that, prior to this complaint, Owers had repeatedly raped her and subjected her to savage sexual abuse. Owers was charged and remanded in January 2025 after refusing to answer when police questioned him about these accusations.
